PREPARING MENTALLY FOR COMING DISASTERS

When you think of disasters, what comes to mind? Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods?

As a nation, we face the daily threat of all kinds of disasters, both natural disasters and man-made disasters. These include hurricanes, storm surge, earthquakes, floods, fires, mud slides, winter storms and power outages, tornados, tsunamis, tidal waves, drought, etc.

But there are also other kinds of disasters that we must be prepared for mentally and physically. These include things such as national emergencies, terrorist attacks, biological attacks, chemical attacks, civil unrest, martial law, avian or bird flu, quarantine, and war. These kinds of disasters are not as common, but they are very real threats in this day and age of terrorism.

Many of the above disasters can result in martial law, quarantine, and the disruption of the transportation of food and services to affected areas of the country. In other words, if the bird flu broke out in Arkansas, for example, the federal and state governments could enforce a quarantine of that whole area of the country by using soldiers and martial law. As a result of a quarantine, all shipments of food and other supplies into the affected area could be stopped indefinitely. People would not be permitted to leave the quarantine area, and they would have to survive on their own for an extended period of time.

Are you prepared for a disaster scenario like this? Have you thought through the ramifications of a biological or chemical attack by terrorists or of the break out of a the bird flu or some other such epidemic?

I'm not sharing these possibilities with you to cause you to live in fear. That's the last thing we need. Instead, I'm sharing them with you for you to prepare yourself mentally for the possibility of these kinds of disasters happening in your area of the country. If you prepare yourself mentally now, then it will motivate you to get yourself prepared to survive such a disaster and overcome it. In other words, it doesn't have to be the end of you and your family. There is hope, and I believe that if you prepare now for it, you can survive what is coming next. In fact, I believe that if you prepare for it now, you will be able to overcome during such hard times and be able to help save a lot of other people in the process through proper preparation.

I can hear some of you saying that this is a kind of "doomsday" thinking that only creates panic and fear in people. All I can say is that our nation has experienced all kinds of disasters over the past 100 years, and none of the ones I mentioned above are improbable or impossible. Some may seem unlikely, yet all of them are possible. My point in this postings is to encourage you to start thinking about the possibilities and preparing yourself mentally for what could happen in our country. Once you prepare yourself mentally, then it is time to prepare yourself so that you can survive and overcome through whatever disasters strike our country next. Remember Hurricane Katrina and what happened to all of the people in New Orleans and the surrounding area who weren't prepared for what did happen.

Remember: the secret to surviving disasters is BEING PREPARED beforehand! Not next week, not next month, not next year, not when you have time, not when you think something bad is going to happen - but NOW.

Keep checking back with my postings as I will be providing you with a lot of more useful information and resources to help you get prepared now for the inevitable disasters on the horizon. You do not need to live in fear and anxiety - IF you're prepared to survive and overcome through whatever disasters strike next. BE PREPARED!
